Budgeting

Learning to budget is an important skill which can help you take control of your financial future.

Budgeting is a vital element in your financial plan. Many financial counsellors identify budgeting as a life skill that can make a significant difference to your finances today and in the future.

To get started, all you need do is simply track your spending for a set period. It can be quite an eye opener to see exactly how much you spend on items such as take aways, a coffee in the morning, magazines, etc.

You can take the first step in gaining control of your budget by using the SSFS Budget Calculator. Simply enter the details of what you spend - the results may surprise you.

Once you’ve tracked your spending for a few months, take the time to review where your money is going. You may decide to change your priorities or perhaps even start a savings program.

Once you’ve reviewed your priorities, consider setting yourself some savings goals. Having a goal in mind can help you focus on making the most of your income.

Time Frame
 Savings Suggestions
Short-term - 1 to 2 years A holiday, a new car
Medium-term - 3 to 5 years A deposit to purchase a property
Long-term - 5 years plus Your retirement savings

Remember, budgeting is one of the foundations of your financial plan.  By taking control of your budget, you can take control of your financial future.
